Men’s Track & Field Takes Down Pair of Academy Records

CARLISLE, Pa. – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's indoor track and field team competed in the DuCharme Relays at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. The squad established new Academy records in two events at Dickinson.

Senior co-captain Brandon Barrett (Kingwood, Texas) led the Mariners with an overall meet victory and Academy record-performance in the 300-meter with a time of 37.35. The school record that he broke was set in 1995. In addition, juniors Hunter Karass (Marlboro, N.J.) and Kevin Young (The Woodlands, Texas) placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the same event.

The 4 x 1 mile relay team of rookie Thomas Routt (Ellicott City, Md.), sophomore Daniel Baxter (Coxsackie, N.Y.), freshman Nathan Rogers (South Bend, Wash.) and junior Logan Swann (Wilmington, N.C.) also took down an Academy record, running 19:32.67 (record was established in 1999).

The USMMA throwers had a big day in the shot put with six of the eight competing athletes achieving personal best marks. Senior Robert Baker (Havre De Grace, Md.) had the strongest finish placing seventh overall among collegiate competitors with a throw of 12.63 meters. Senior Garret Washington (Chatham, N.Y.) achieved personal best marks in the 55-meter hurdles (9.13 – seventh place), triple jump (12.14 meters – fourth place) and the high jump (1.72 meters – sixth place).

The men's distance medley relay dropped 15 seconds off their season's best run with a second place finish at the meet. They narrowly fell to the distance powerhouse squad of Dickinson College, running a time of 11:05.03. The team was comprised of Routt, senior Joshua Norris (San Marcos, Texas), freshman Krzysztof Nowacki (Aurora, Colo.) and Baxter.

"There were some fantastic performances this week. The team had a lot of fun running some different events. The throwers even participated head-to-head with two teams in a 'fat man's relay' (4 x 200-meters). The team is poised for a big meet this weekend at the Landmark Conference Championships," Head Coach Gregory Lott said.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday when they travel to Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa. for the 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
