KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 20, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team defeated visiting non-conference opponent Ramapo College, 7-2, at home on Friday at the Brooks Stadium Courts. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 9-5 on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 8-5.
Ramapo only had five players, so the Roadrunners forfeited at #3 doubles and #6 singles, giving USMMA a 2-0 lead to start the match. They did win the first match to go final, however, at #1 doubles by the score of 8-1. #5 singles ended next, with senior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) earning a 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
The match was clinched in favor of the Mariners on Zakrevski's three-set win at #4, 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6 in the tiebreaker). The remainder of the singles action saw freshman Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) win a three-setter, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (14-12 in the tiebreaker) at #2, classmate Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) take a 7-5, 6-4 decision at #3 and the Roadrunners claiming a straight-set triumph at #1.
Schwartz and junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) earned a forfeit win at #3 doubles and Deeter claimed the forfeit victory at #6 singles.

The Mariners close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon, with a pivotal Skyline Conference matchup against four-time reigning champions Yeshiva that will determine the Skyline regular season title. First serve in doubles action is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Prior to the start of the match, the Mariners will hold a special Senior Day Ceremony for its three seniors – McDonough, Schwartz and Katherine Mason (Knoxville, Tenn.).
