KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 7, 2018) – The USMMA tennis team hosted Skyline opponent Purchase College for a match on Saturday morning and defeated the Panthers by the final of 8-1. With the victory, the Mariners improve to an even 5-5 overall (3-0 Skyline), while Purchase falls to 2-4 (2-2 Skyline) in defeat.
The Mariners swept doubles action, with the #3 pairing of senior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) and junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) finishing first with an 8-0 victory, followed by the freshman duo of Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) and Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) claiming a 8-1 win at #1. Senior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and junior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) finished up doubles with an 8-2 triumph at #2.
In singles, Booth at #3 (6-0, 6-0) and Carey at #2 (6-0, 6-1) clinched the win for the Mariners with victories in the first two matches to go final. Schwartz came out on top at #6, 6-0, 6-0, followed by Zakrevski at #4 (6-3, 6-2) and McDonough at #1 (6-2, 6-1). The Panthers' lone point came at the #5 spot in a three-set victory, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9).

The Mariners are back in action this Monday, April 9, for the make-up match against Farmingdale State that was postponed twice last week. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Farmingdale, N.Y.
