KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 18, 2017) – On Tuesday, the USMMA tennis team defeated visiting Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, 9-0, at the Brooks Stadium Courts. With the win, the Mariners' record improves to 6-2 (4-1 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 1-6 (0-4 Skyline) in defeat.
In doubles action, both the #2 flight of senior Jordan Kendall (Winter Haven, Fla.) and freshman Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) and the #1 flight of senior James Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) and junior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) earned 8-1 victories. At #3, sophomores Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) and William Peterson (Midlothian, Va.) sweated out a lengthy 9-7 win to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead in the match.
McDonough, who was playing in his first action of the season, won the first singles match for Merchant Marine at #2 when his opponent retired after McDonough was up 5-0 in the first set. Hicks followed with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win to clinch the team victory.
McGaffigan earned a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at #3 and then junior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) followed with a 6-1, 6-1, win at #5. Freshman Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) at #6 and Kendall at #4 concluded the match with 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 wins, respectively.
The Mariners are back in action this Friday, April 21, when they host another Skyline Conference match, this time against Sarah Lawrence College, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
