Kings Point, NY - The USMMA tennis team did not go quietly against the only program to ever win a Landmark Conference championship, but ultimately fell 6-3 to Drew. Geri Villan (Yonkers, NY) battled all day and eventually earned a tough 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6) victory at #3 singles for the Mariners. James Hicks (Haddon Heights, NJ) continued his strong season with a 6-1, 6-2 dismantling of Tommy Butschi at #1 singles.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (4-4, 1-3 Landmark) also picked up a point at #4 singles as Karl Sasse (Frederick, MD) secured a 6-3, 6-1 decision. However, the Mariners were fighting an uphill battle after the Rangers claimed all three tightly contested doubles matches.
Drew (3-4, 3-2 Landmark) sealed the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win from Adam Clark at #2 singles as well as a Derek McMullen 6-2, 6-3 decision at #5 singles. Derek Acuna (Bainbridge Island, WA) nearly rallied to force a third set at #6 singles but fell 6-1, 7-5.
USMMA returns to the court at home this Saturday for a Landmark Conference tilt against Goucher.
