Selinsgrove, PA - The USMMA tennis team picked up its first Landmark Conference win in two years, and second in program history, Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 decision at Susquehanna. The Mariners left no doubt on the court, winning five-of-six singles matches in straight sets. Geri Villan (Yonkers, NY) and Jack Walsh (Glen Allen, VA) earned identical 6-4, 6-0 triumphs at third and fifth singles, respectively. USMMA is currently riding a four-game winning streak and has doubled its win total from the 2013 season.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (4-2, 1-1 Landmark) saw James Hicks (Haddon Heights, NJ) lock up a 6-4, 6-3 straight set triumph over Jeremy Neville at first singles. Karl Sasse (Frederick, MD) surrendered the fewest number of games with a 6-2, 6-1 rout at fourth singles. Captain Derek Acuna (Bainbridge Island, WA) dispatched Matthew Weller, 6-1, 6-3, at sixth singles.
Susquehanna (3-10, 0-3 Landmark) notched its only point on the strength of a Dan Kinney victory at second singles. USMMA received a win by forfeit at first doubles while Sasse and Walsh rolled to an 8-2 triumph at second doubles. The 8-1 final score was rounded out by an 8-1 decision at third doubles as Christian Miller (El Paso, TX) and Acuna combined to knock off Tyler Haussener and Weller.
The USMMA tennis team returns to the court tomorrow for another Landmark Conference match on the road as they take on Catholic.
