Merchant Marine Blanks York (NY), 9-0

Kings Point, NY - The USMMA tennis team earned its second victory of the 2014 season, matching its win total from last year, with a 9-0 blowout of York (NY) Thursday afternoon.  The Mariners got redemption in a big way after falling to the Cardinals in 2013, winning four-of-six singles matches by a perfect count of 6-0, 6-0.  The triumph also moves USMMA back to .500 on the year as the Mariners' record improves to 2-2.

Merchant Marine got unblemished straight set wins from James Hicks (Haddon Heights, NJ) at first singles, Karl Sasse (Frederick, MD) at fourth singles, Jack Walsh (Glen Allen, VA) at fifth singles, and Derek Acuna (Bainbridge Island, NY) at sixth singles.  Christian Miller (El Paso, TX) won his first match of the year at second singles as he gutted out a tight 6-3, 6-3 victory against Dimitri Bazin.  Geri Villan (Yonkers, NY) completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at third singles.

York (NY) forfeited the second doubles point while Hicks and Villan routed Haseeb Raza and Hasain Khatri, 8-1, in the top doubles match.  Walsh and Acuna posted one last shutout for the Mariners with an 8-0 rout at third doubles.

The Mariners return to the court Saturday for a Landmark Conference clash at Catholic.
