Tennis Narrowly Drops Season Opener to St. Joseph's (LI), 5-4

Kings Point, NY - The USMMA tennis team opened the 2014 season with a nail biting 5-4 loss to St. Joseph's (LI) Thursday afternoon.  James Hicks (Haddon Heights, NJ) won his match at first singles in three sets as the Mariners took four of the six singles points.  

Geri Villan (Yonkers, NY) secured a 7-5, 6-2 verdict at #3 singles while Karl Sasse (Frederick, MD) earned a three-set win at fourth singles after dropping the opening set.  Merchant Marine (0-1) also got a victory from its captain Derek Acuna (Bainbridge Island, WA) at #6 singles, 6-4, 6-1.

St. Joseph's (LI) (1-1) put away the match with a triumph in all three doubles contests.  Adam Friel had a decisive win for the Golden Eagles at #2 singles and was part of the #1 doubles team that had an 8-4 victory.

The USMMA tennis team returns to action tomorrow against Landmark Conference rival Juniata.
