USMMA Sweeps Landmark Weekend vs. Catholic, Drew, and Goucher
The USMMA men's swimming and diving team rattled off three Landmark Conference victories over the weekend, continuing the program's historical perfect record against league opposition. The Mariners rolled past Goucher and Drew on Saturday by scores of 51-37 and and 55-33 before Sunday's 121.5-79.5 verdict over Catholic.
Case Kuikhoven (Ketchikan, AK) was voted Mariner of the Meet by his teammates on Saturday after breaking his season best by over 13 seconds with a 5:13.99 performance in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Scout Walz (Elizabethton, TN) was dominant in the 1000 freestyle while classmate Stone Hewitt (Destin, FL) touched first in the 100 butterfly. Hunter Rowan (Matthews, NC) and Aloysius Vita (Davidsonville, MD) also notched season bests in event wins, claiming the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle, respectively.
USMMA started off Sunday with a strong performance in the 200 medley relay as the team shaved 3 seconds off of its season best. Kevin Lindgren (Palm City, FL) won the 50 freestyle and made a NCAA "B" cut in the 200 backstroke by two seconds with a time of 1:51.80. Joshua Jepsen (San Diego, CA) set a new season best in the 200 butterfly with a pace of 2:02.38. Karl Sasse (Frederick, MD) took first-place in the 200 breaststroke as he swam the event in a new season benchmark of 2:11.62.
Joshua Mccormick (Granite Bay, CA) posted a time of 1:48.04 in the 200 freestyle, dropping three seconds off of his season best and tying for first-place. Jordan Cripe (Monterey, CA) dropped 13 seconds in the 1000 free and 8 seconds in 500 freestyle. Walz improved another eight seconds on his 1000 freestyle swim from the day before.
Merchant Marine returns to the pool Saturday, January 18 for a senior day contest at O'Hara Pool against rival Coast Guard.
