Johan Lopez Named Merchant Marine Diving Coach

Kings Point, NY – United States Merchant Marine Academy Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Head Coach Sean Tedesco recently announced the hiring of Johan Lopez as the program's new diving coach.  Lopez has served the last four seasons as the Head Diving Coach at his alma mater, Lehman College.  He was a member of the coaching staff that led Lehman to the 2013 CUNYAC Chamnpionship.

"I feel blessed and privileged to have the opportunity to coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy," said Lopez.   "I look forward to helping to continue the overall success of the USMMA Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving programs."

Lopez was a three-time CUNYAC diving champion, capturing individual crowns in 2007, 2008, and 2009.  In his time as a coach at Lehman College, Lopez was also responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Apex Pool.   He served as the head lifeguard at Apex Pool as well as the assistant equipment manager and team coordinator.  Lopez also ran a very successful pre-team swimming program, which graduates children of all ages onto the Apex Swim Team.  In that project, he worked with people ranging from ages five to twenty-seven in learning how to swim competitively.

"I am thrilled that Coach Lopez has joined our staff," said Tedesco.  "His knowledge, enthusiasm and background will provide our student-athletes the coaching they need to reach the next level of competition."

Lopez also coached an outdoor summer team at the Larchmont Yacht Club Pool (LYC), which is the size of two Olympic pools.  Lopez's responsibilities ranged from coaching to maintaining a safe environment for children and adults who use the facility.  At the Larchmont Yacht Club he coached the 2012 County Diving Champion.

Lopez served as the diving coach at several high schools between 2010-12 including Rye High School, Mamaroneck High School, Bronxville High School, and The Ursuline School.  He had a male and female diver qualify to NYSPHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships every season and had one diver receive All-American recognition in 2010 and 2011.

Lopez holds a Bachelor's of Science in Dietetics, Food & Nutrition and is currently pursuing a Master's of Mathematics at Lehman College.  He is American Red Cross as well as USA Diving Certified and currently resides in Mount Vernon, NY.
