Before USMMA: Gabbard was a four year member of the swimming team at Vacaville High School under head coach Billy Doughty. He served as team captain and earned a section championship. Gabbard was also named a high school All-American as well as taking home all-league accolades. Academically, he was a member of the honor roll.
