Mariner Men’s Soccer Program Receives Sportsmanship Award From Metro Soccer Officials Association

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2018) – This past Monday, the New York Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NYMISOA) held its annual awards ceremony and announced that the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer program was the 2018 recipient of the Doc Feld Sportsmanship Award for four-year men's college programs.

NYMISOA is made up of nearly 100 college referees in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County. Every college season, the referees vote for the college programs that displayed the greatest amount of sportsmanship and fair play during the recent college season.

Out of the 50-plus men's college programs across all three divisions of the NCAA in the New York Metropolitan Area the Mariners were selected by the members of NYMISOA as the recipients of this award. USMMA had previously received this same award back in 1998.

Interim Assistant Coach Will Sprouse '08, as well as seniors Joe Springer (Bowie, Md.) and Michael Mischler (Monroe Township, N.J.) attended the ceremony on Monday night to receive the award.

During the 2018 season, the Mariners ranked ninth out of the 11 Skyline Conference teams in total yellow cards with just 21 cautions over 19 games. Merchant Marine finished the season with a 12-5-2 overall record and reached the finals of the Skyline Conference Tournament.
