TEANECK, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2018) – On Sunday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team defeated Yeshiva University, 2-0, in a Skyline Conference game played at Votee Park in New Jersey. In victory, the Mariners end the regular season with a 10-4-2 overall record (6-3-1 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 7-6 (5-4 Skyline) with the loss.
A pair of seniors scored the two goals for the Mariners, as Michael Mischler (Monroe Township, N.J.) opened the scoring in the 40th minutes when he tallied off a corner kick. Classmate Wagner Mogga (Kiambu, Kenya) added an insurance goal in the 89th minute.
USMMA outshot Yeshiva, 29-5, on the night – 20-2 in the first half and 9-3 in the second. Junior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) faced just two shots on goal and turned both of them away. He earned his seventh shutout of the season (sixth solo).
For Yeshiva, senior Matan Meloul started the game between the pipes and made 12 saves in the first half. In the second half, freshman Edgar Schottland took over tending the net and he finished the night with one save.
The Mariners have finished the regular season with 19 points in the Skyline standings, which currently rank them in third place. They cannot finish higher than third, so they will compete in the first round of the upcoming Skyline Tournament next weekend. All the other teams still have one more game to play, so the final seedings for the tourney will not be known until the regular season concludes this Wednesday, Oct. 24. More information about the first-round matchup next weekend will be available on www.USMMASports.com later this week.
