KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2018) - The USMMA men's soccer team started the 2018 season off on the right foot, shutting out visiting Hartwick College, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium. A pair of "rookies" scored the Mariners' two goals on the day and junior goalkeeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) and freshman Alvaro Herrera Padilla (Panama City, Panama) combined for the clean sheet.

Merchant Marine completely controlled possession throughout the contest, eventually out-shooting the Hawks by a total of 34-1 over the 90 minutes. The lone Hartwick shot - which sailed high of the net - came in the eighth minute, shortly after the Mariners' first goal of the game.
That opening tally was scored by sophomore Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) in the sixth minute. USMMA was awarded a free kick after a yellow card was issued against the Hawks and senior Neil Painter (New Cumberland, Pa.) took the kick and sent a lob into the box, which connected with Lysakowski's head and the sophomore sent it towards the right post. Hartwick's keeper, freshman Jack Riordan, got a hand on it, but the ball snuck into the right side to put the Mariners ahead, 1-0.
Freshman David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) doubled the Merchant Marine lead in the 39th minute when he took advantage of a misplay by a Hartwick defender on a dump in by the Mariners. Kelly stole the ball from the defender, dribbled to his right and fired a shot low into the right side of the net.
USMMA tallied 16 shots in the first half and 18 in the second. Riordan was kept very busy, as he finished the day with 12 saves for the Hawks. Neither Milner, who played over 86 minutes, nor Herrera Padilla, who finished out the final 3:35, faced a shot on goal.
The Mariners are back in action this coming Wednesday, Sept. 5, when they host Medgar Evers. Opening whistle is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
