Poulin Tabbed Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete

TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
The honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, and sports information directors. Chosen at the end of each sport season, the first six honorees will be announced over the next two weeks.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Gary Poulin has been named the Men's Soccer Senior Scholar Athlete. Poulin was a four-year starter for the Mariners, racking up 39 wins during his career. He is a three-time All-Landmark selection including First Team honors in 2011 and 2013. This past season Poulin started every game for USMMA and finished with a 1.32 goals against average with 74 saves.
In his four years competing at USMMA, Poulin helped the team earn four appearances in the Landmark Conference tournament and three trips to the NCAA tournament. In 2010, the Mariners advanced to the Elite Eight. Poulin finished the 2010 season with a career best 0.77 goals against average with 10 shutouts.
Poulin has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.58 while majoring in Marine Engineering Systems at Merchant Marine. Originally from Hauppauge, N.Y., He is a three-time Landmark Honor Roll recipient and two-time All-Academic Team member. Poulin also earned Capital One Academic All-District and NSCAA Scholar All-Region honors.
"Gary is the highest achieving goalkeeper in the long history of USMMA soccer," said Merchant Marine Head Coach Michael Smolens. "He has achieved all this success on the field, while excelling in the classroom in a very challenging major and within the structure of our Regimental program. Our coaches are very proud of all he has accomplished here and can't wait to see the success he has in the future."
