Kings Point, NY – The USMMA men's soccer team won its first game of the season with a 5-0 shutout against York College Saturday morning at Brooks Stadium. Sophomore Dan Weldon (Holland Township, NJ) and senior Kyle Parker (East Islip, NY) led the offense with one goal and one assist a piece. Senior goaltender Gary Poulin (Hauppauge, NY) was only forced to make one save to earn his first clean sheet of the 2013 campaign.
"Coach Fitzgerald, Coach Banks, and I were pleased with the way the team bounced back from such a disappointing loss Wednesday with a win today," said USMMA Head Coach Michael Smolens. "We got offense from a number of different sources, which was terrific. We're pleased with the process we are making and we're looking to keep improving in the big week ahead."
Merchant Marine (1-3-0) cracked the scoreboard with its first goal in the 31st minute as Parker scored from seven yard out on a cross from Weldon. In the 34th minute the Mariners went up 2-0 on a goal from Micahel Hahn (San Antonio, TX), assisted by Kyle Parker. USMMA held a 2-0 edge as the two sides headed into the locker room for the halftime.
The Mariners increased their margin in the 51st minute with an unassisted shot from Dan Weldon that found the top-right corner of the goal. Just four minutes later Erik Kempinski (Milford, NJ) scored on a header while Tim Hughes (Ballston Lake, NY) and Kyle Redrow (West Deptford, NJ) picked up assists on the play. Merchant Marine cemented the victory with a final goal in the 74th minute, a six-yard header from freshman Michael Heckmuller (Long Beach, CA). Connor Wrynn (New Fairfield, CT) and David Burkhardt (Cuthogue, NY) posted assists on the Mariners final tally.
York (1-1-0) had a tough time penetrating the Mariners defense as only Rohan Burrell and Rachidi Amadou came away with shots for the Cardinals.
The USMMA soccer team will look for its second win of the season Wednesday at Maritime (NY). Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
