Late Goal Not Enough as Mariners Fall at Union, 2-1

Schenectady, NY - The USMMA men's soccer game dropped a 2-1 decision to Union Saturday afternoon at the Union College Soccer Classic.  Freshman Tim Hughes (Ballston Lake, NY) registered the first goal of his collegiate career and of the Mariners season in the 90th minute.  Classmate Brennan Becker (Weston, FL) earned an assist on the tally but the Mariners were unable to complete a late comeback.

"We have a lot of different guys in different roles for us this season," said Head Coach Michael Smolens.  "However, while we obviously didn't want to start 0-2 this year we learned a lot about our team.  We learned those things and will get better because of the quality competition we played this weekend."

Union (2-0-0) opened the scoring just 1:45 before halftime as Kevin Janson converted on a penalty kick, finding the lower right corner of the net.  The Dutchmen made it a 2-0 affair just under five minutes into the second half as Daniel Miller's strike from just outside the 18-yard box also found the back of the net.

Merchant Marine (0-2-0) scored with 37 seconds remaining in regulation as Hughes struck a header through traffic for USMMA's first marker of the 2013 campaign.  The Mariners outshot the home team in the second half but dropped its second straight contest.

The USMMA soccer team will look to bounce back Wednesday night as they take on Rutgers-Newark on the road at 7:00 pm.
