SCHENECTADY, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men's soccer team defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy 2-0 in the second game of the Union Soccer Classic.

RPI opened the scoring early as sophomore midfielder Matt Carberry buried the feed from sophomore forward Esmir Hadzic at the 1:15-minute mark of the first half.

An abundance of mid-field play was the theme of the game as both teams shook off the dust of a long offseason. The first half ended with the Engineers leading 1-0.

RPI was quick to strike in the second half as well as senior defenseman Ian Halter registered his first goal of the season. Halter buried a header past senior goaltender Gary Poulin. Junior midfielder Matt Koizol, one of Engineers' captains and the leading scorer from a year ago, registered his first point of the season with the pass to Halter off a free kick.

USMMA sophomore forward Dan Weldon received a yellow card after an incident at the 88-minute mark.

RPI goalkeeper Rob Dewald made the lone save of the night off a quick shot by Mariner's senior midfielder Kevin Pfeil.

Both teams return to action tomorrow in the second leg of the Union Soccer Classic. The Mariners will take on Union College at 2 p.m. at College Park. RPI will play Berkeley College at 4:30 p.m.
