The Unites States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (7-6-0, 3-2) defeated the Moravian College Greyhounds (5-8-1, 0-4-0) by a score of 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem, PA.
Merchant Marine's lone tally came by way of a free kick off the foot of sophomore forward Nick Vogel in the 40th minute. The score gives Vogel six goals on the season which ties him for third in the Landmark Conference.
The contest was played evenly throughout, with neither side taking control of the play. Each team had some chances as Moravian outshot Kings Point by a slim 14-13 margin.
Moravian's best chance to knot the equalizer came in the waning seconds of regulation as they pressed their entire squad forward. Mariner's junior goalkeeper Stephen Fucito made an initial save but the rebound bounced right to a Greyhound attacker. Junior defender Kyle Parker was positioned perfectly on the goal line to make the save and clear the ball to preserve the USMMA victory.
Fucito earned his fourth shutout of the year. His two saves bring his Landmark Conference leading total up to 52.
"Today wasn't our best match but the team got the result we needed," said Head Coach Mike Smolens. "It sets us up for a big game with Drew this Wednesday as our guys look to prepare themselves for heavy competition within the conference."
The Mariners will return to action Wednesday October 17th at 7:00 PM as they travel to Drew University (8-4-2, 2-2) for their final road contest of the regular season.
