Poulin shows off his brains and brawn for Mariners

It's been quite a week for U.S. Merchant Marine Academy junior goalkeeper Gary Poulin.

The Hauppauge, N.Y. resident was honored not only for his on-the-field achievements, but for his classroom work as well.

Named as the top goalkeeper in the conference late last week, Poulin on Monday was selected as the Landmark Conference defensive player of the week for his two shutouts as the Mariners recorded two victories in the playoffs, booking a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament. He backstopped the 3-0 win over Drew University in the tournament semifinal on Wednesday and made some vital saves in the 1-0 triumph over host Catholic University in the championship game on Saturday.

Also on Monday, Poulin discovered he was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Team (District 3). He was among only two Landmark players to have received the academic honors, as Catholic senior Mike DeMarco was selected to the District 2 team.

Poulin earned academic honors for the first time after a standout season in goal . He earned his second All-Conference selection as he has recorded a 1.10 goals-against average, a .800 save percentage and six shutouts. He was also a key performer in USMMA's run to the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 last season.

In the classroom, Poulin has forged a 3.59 GPA while majoring in Marine Engineering Systems.

Poulin is expected to start for the Mariners against Rutgers University-Camden in a Division III first-round match in Camden, N.J. at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
