Double honors for Kessler: Mariner, Landmark player of the week
KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- Junior forward Cody Kessler, who scored goals in both of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's wins en route to the Landmark Conference soccer title, was named the Mariners men's athlete of the week on Tuesday.
Kessler, who was named the Landmark offensive player of the week, played a vital role in all of the four goals the Mariners scored last week.
The Delmar, N.Y. native scored one goal, set up a second and was fouled in the penalty area that led to a penalty kick in the 3-0 semifinal triumph over Drew University at Kean University in Union, N.J. last Wednesday.
Three days later on Saturday, he tallied the lone goal in the 1-0 final win over host Catholic University in Washington, D.C. The victory clinched an NCAA Division III men's soccer berth for Kings Point, which plays at Rutgers University-Camden in a first-round game in Camden, N.J. at 5 p.m. Saturday. The winners will play the victory of the 7:30 p.m. encounter between Wesleyan and the Misericordia University, on Sunday.
