Sophomoric heroics earn soccer’s Cuellar men’s athlete of the week
Sophomore midfielder Nick Cuellar, who scored the winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over Susquehanna to clinch a Landmark Conference semifinal berth, was named the Mariners' men's athlete of the week.
Cuellar was honored for the week ending on Sunday, Oct. 23.
The San Diego, Calif. native scored his first goal of the season for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (9-6-1, 4-2-1), beating goalkeeper Pat Horan in a scramble in the penalty area at 4:59 of the second overtime.
Junior defender Kurt Olsen, whose pass set up Cuellar's game-winner, gave Kings Point a 1-0 halftime lead by converting a penalty kick.
Kings Point, which is in third place, will play at first-place Catholic University or second-place Drew University in the conference semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The Landmark final is set for Saturday, Nov. 5.
Catholic (12-3, 6-0) needs a tie or a win with Drew (14-2, 5-1) on Saturday to clinch the conference crown.
The Mariners are off this week because it is final exam week.
