Soccer's Irvine Landmark Conference defensive player of the week
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – U.S. Merchant Marine senior defender Hollis Irvine (Greenwich, N.J.) has been named the Landmark Conference men's defensive player of the week.
Irvine helped anchor a Mariners defense that recorded two shutouts to open the season. Kings Point blanked host SUNY-Maritime in its season opener, 1-0, on Irvine's first goal of the campaign. The Mariners registered a 4-0 win over York College Saturday.
"We're pleased to have Hollis receive this honor," Mariners coach Mike Smolens said. "Defensively, we've gotten off to a strong start and Hollis is a big part of our success of shutting down the opposition.
"Hollis also gives us an added presence of going into the attack. We're looking for him to continue it."
The Mariners (2-1), who dropped a 1-0 decision at Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday, host archrival Coast Guard at 11 a.m. Saturday.
