KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 29, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team defeated rival SUNY Maritime, 19-9, in a Skyline Conference contest on Thursday night at Brooks Stadium. With the victory, the Mariners retain the Hagedorn Cup, while their record improves to 7-0 (2-0 Skyline) on the season and the Privateers drop to 6-2 (2-1 Skyline).
With a game-high six points on the night (two goals and four assists), senior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) became the 10th player in USMMA men's lacrosse history to reach the 200 career point plateau. He joins teammate Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.), who hit the milestone earlier this month.
Treon, junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) and sophomore Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) all produced five points on the night, as Treon had two goals and three assists, Renard found the back of the net five times and Roros scored four times and dished out one helper.
Senior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) both recorded two goals apiece, while freshmen Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) and Tristan Kelehan (Elkridge, Md.) scored the last two Mariner goals.
In goal, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) earned the victory with 14 saves in just under 56 minutes of action. Classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) finished out the final four-plus minutes and was busy, as he made four stops.
Buser was 15-for-20 from the face-off X with a game-high 11 groundballs, while junior Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) went 6-for-10 on the night with four GBs. Senior middie Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) also gobbled up four groundballs on the night and was one of five Mariners that finished the game with one caused turnover.
Merchant Marine jumped ahead by a 3-0 score early and worked its advantage up to 7-1 late in the first but a key penalty against the Mariners allowed the Privateers to inch closer with three-straight goals (two in the first and one early in the second quarter). The Mariners answered by scoring the next two goals to regain a five-goal edge at 9-4, before Maritime responded with a tally. USMMA went on to score the next two goals again and took an 11-5 lead into the halftime break.
After a slow start in the second half for both teams the Privateers opened the second half with three unanswered goals. With the final seconds ticking off the clock in the third quarter, Treon found Renard for a beautiful "alley-oop" one-timer goal that helped to halt Maritime's momentum. That sparked an 8-1 rally for the Mariners and they sailed on to the big conference victory.
Maritime was led by freshman Matt DeMeo, who had three goals. Junior Brett Trodden also had three points with two goals and one assist, while freshman Collin Flannery added two goals while and Nick Pellegrino and junior Michael Petty both found the back of the net once in the game.
Sophomore Mark Buchner had six ground balls and classmate Patrick McAllister sophomore Ciaran McEnroe both scooped up two loose balls. Freshman Joey Manno was 8-of-24 from the face-off X and sophomore Danny Connell led all players in the game with two caused turnovers.
Senior goalie Brendan McNally made nine saves while playing the majority of the 60 minutes. He suffered the loss. Senior Ian Ballou made two stops in the final 3:10 of the game.
The Mariners will step back outside of Skyline Conference action this Saturday, March 31, for a home game against Mitchell College. First face-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
