KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 18, 2015) – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team paid tribute to its eight graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony before it's Landmark Conference contest against visiting Drew University. On the field, the Mariners put the cherry on top of the beautiful day at Brooks Stadium with a hard-earned 7-5 victory over the Rangers. USMMA improves to 5-7 overall (2-4 Landmark) with the win, while Drew falls to 2-10 (0-6 Landmark).
The Mariners held a 4-1 lead at the half thanks to two, quick first-quarter goals by freshman Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and senior Geoff Harty (Chicago, Ill.). Freshman Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) assisted on Coll's tally, while Coll got the helper on Harty's. In the second quarter, the Rangers got on the board with a quick score by freshman Charles Maynard, assisted by sophomore Michael Lloyd, but the Merchant Marine responded with a goal by senior Troy Smith (Deer Park, Texas) from junior Ethan Medler (Kingwood, Texas) and another by Harty to round out the scoring in the half.
The Rangers charged back right out of the gate in the second half and scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead. Just 43 seconds after their last tally, Coll struck for the second time in the game to tie the score with 2:29 to play in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Coll scored with six minutes to play to put the Mariners ahead after senior Kyle Sammis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) caused a turnover at midfield on a clear attempt by Drew, scooped up the groundball, fired a shot that the Rangers goalie was able to save, but went right to Coll, who picked up the GB and buried it home for his hat trick tally. Harty added an insurance goal with 50 seconds left on a beauty after falling down on the right side, and firing a shot high while regaining his stance with a defender all over him.
Senior goalie Alex Peyreigne (Weston, Conn.) made 11 saves for his fifth victory of the season. Sophomore Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) was 10-for-15 from the faceoff-X and scooped up a game-high eight groundballs. Sammis had five GBs and two caused turnovers. Junior defender Gus Sawicki (Louisville, Colo.) contributed with three groundballs.
Drew got a goal and an assist from two players – Lloyd and senior Hutch Fisher – and three others found the back of the net. Lloyd also led the squad with six groundballs. Sophomore goalie Teddy Sweeney made 18 saves in the loss.
Up next, the Mariners will host non-conference opponent Mitchell College (5-7) in the 2015 home finale at Brooks Stadium this Wednesday night, April 22. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTE: USMMA honored Harty, Smith, Sammis, Peyreigne and fellow seniors Ian Motley (Ossining, N.Y.), Ray Waters (Sayville, N.Y.), Connor Willcox (McKinney, Texas) and Jeff Michaelson (Radnor, Pa.) before the game for their four years of hard work and dedication to the Merchant Marine men's lacrosse team. All eight seniors started for the Mariners.
