Sophomore Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) was 14-for-23 in the faceoff-X and also picked up a game-high eight groundballs. Senior Kyle Sammis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) scooped up six GBs and matched the team-high with classmate Ray Waters (Sayville, N.Y.) in causing two turnovers.
In goal, senior Alex Peyreigne (Weston, Conn.) made 19 saves, including 14 in the second half while the Mariners were trying to close in on the Blue Jays.
For Elizabethtown, freshman Kevin Meakim recorded four goals, while senior Russ LeClair also had a hat trick with three tallies. Five other Blue Jays found the back of the net in the contest. Senior goalie Chris Wenger made seven saves in earning the victory between the pipes.
The hosts led 4-0 after one quarter of action and got the lead up to 5-0 with a tally just 31 seconds into the second. The Mariners responded with two straight by Harty followed by a goal by Treon (assisted by Harty) to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Blue Jays scored one final goal with just 26 seconds remaining in the first half and went into the halftime break leading, 6-3.
In the third quarter, E-Town struck back-to-back under three minutes apart to take an 8-3 advantage. Harty scored two-straight, the second assisted by Waters, to bring Merchant Marine back within three, but the home squad pulled back ahead by four after a tally with 3:24 to go in the quarter.
The Mariners scored three of the first four goals of the final period of play, as Coll, Harty and Smith all converted, to make it a two-goal game, 10-8. The Blue Jays responded and took some wind out of the USMMA sails with consecutive goals just 18 seconds apart at 5:19 and 5:01, to take back the momentum they would need to seal the victory.
Merchant Marine will be back in action on Wednesday night, April 8, when the squad travels across the East River to take on rival SUNY Maritime. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. Live stats for the contests are available at this link.
