PURCHASE, N.Y. (March 25, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team defeated non-conference opponent Manhattanville College, 7-6, at GoValiants.com Field on Wednesday night in Westchester County. The Mariners improve to an even 3-3 overall on the season, while the Valiants fall to 2-4.
Senior Geoff Harty (Chicago, Ill.) led the way with five points on three goals and two assists. Freshman Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) contributed with three assists. Four other Mariners found the back of the net in the game – freshmen Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and Ryan Sweeney (Newport, R.I.), as well as sophomore Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.).
Whitenack was also stellar with his faceoff-taking on the night, winning 13-of-16 draws and he led all players by picking up a season-high 13 groundballs. Senior Gus Sawicki (Louisville, Colo.) had a team-best two caused turnovers. In goal, senior Alex Peyreigne (Weston, Conn.) made eight saves for his third victory of the season.
Coll struck first just 17 seconds into the game off an assist by Harty. Manhattanville responded over two minutes later to tie the score and neither team would find another tally the rest of the opening quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Valiants went ahead 2-1 on an unassisted goal, but the Mariners went on to score the next four goals, three of which were on man-up opportunities. Dodson scored the second Merchant Marine goal, Harty had the third and fourth and Sweeney scored his first of the season with just 1:38 on the clock. Senior Ray Waters (Sayville, N.Y.) had an assist on Harty's first goal. USMMA took a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter was another low-scoring period, as Manhattanville tallied first at 8:30, but Harty recorded his hat trick goal with 56 seconds left in the quarter, giving the Mariners a 6-3 advantage.
The Valiants found the back of the net early in the final quarter, before Whitenack scored his third of the season off an assist by Treon. The score remained 7-4 for a good chuck of the fourth quarter until the home squad scored with 2:06 remaining and then again with 1:29 to play. However, the Mariners were able to hold off the Manhattanville comeback to claim the victory.
Sophomore Connor Normandin led the Valiants with two goals and an assists, while freshman Christian Flores had one goal and two helpers. Senior Mike Arena picked up a team-best four groundballs for Manhattanville and sophomore goalie Zach Hoffman made 14 saves between the pipes in the losing effort.
The Mariners will be in action next this Saturday, March 28, when they travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Landmark Conference opponent Susquehanna University. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12-noon at the Crusaders' Sassafras Field.
