Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Catholic In Landmark Home-Opener, 16-6

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 21, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy returned home for its first game in 13 days on the friendly confines of Brooks Stadium on Saturday, hosting Landmark Conference foe Catholic University for the first home league game of the season.

The Mariners lost to the visiting Cardinals by the final of 16-6, dropping their record to 2-3 (1-1 Landmark), while the Cards improve to 6-3 (1-1 Landmark).

Senior Geoff Harty (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led the Merchant Marine offense, as they both recorded two goals and one assist, apiece. Senior goalie Alex Peyreigne (Weston, Conn.) made 12 saves in over 56 minutes of action and also picked up a game-high eight groundballs.

The Mariners also had goals by freshman Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Cameron Hallier (Houston, Texas). Senior Ray Waters (Sayville, N.Y.) contributed to the offense with an assist. On defense, senior Gus Sawicki (Louisville, Colo.) recorded a team-high three caused turnovers.

Catholic jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two quickies in the opening five minutes before Coll found the back of the net at 7:05 off a pass by Harty. The Cardinals would go on to score three more times in the first quarter, however, to lead 5-1 after one.

The teams alternated goals for the next six tallies, with Harty making it 5-2, Treon 6-3 and Treon again 7-4, but Catholic ended the scoring in the half with a goal with just three seconds remaining to take an 8-4 lead into the halftime break.

Harty scored the first goal of the third quarter on a man-up situation off a pass by Waters, but Catholic scored the next eight goals to seal the victroy. Hallier added an unassisted tally with just six seconds remaining.

The Cardinals were led by sophomore Victor Licata, who had a game-high six points on five goals and one assist. Licata also picked up a team-high six groundballs. His classmate, Tim Keith, also found the back of the net five times. In goal, junior Harrison Holak earned the victory with seven saves in just under 56 minutes of play.

Merchant Marine returns to action on Wednesday with a non-conference matchup against Manhattanville College (2-3). Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field on the campus of Manhattanville in Purchase, N.Y.
