KINGS POINT, N.Y (March 8, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team lost for the first time this season to visiting Oswego State in a very close affair, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Stadium. With the loss, the Mariners fall to 1-1 overall, while the Lakers improve to 2-0.
Leading the way once again for USMMA was senior Geoff Harty (Chicago, Ill.), who had a part in every goal the Mariners scored on the day. He found the back of the net twice and assisted on the other three tallies. Freshman Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) scored two goals and classmate Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist. In net, senior Alex Peyreigne (Weston, Conn.) made eight saves and picked up three groundballs in the losing effort.
Treon matched the game-high in groundballs with sophomore Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.), as they both picked up five GBs apiece. Whitenack was also 8-for-14 in faceoffs. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Kyle Sammis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led all players with five caused turnovers and sophomore Matt Amoscato (Rocky Point, N.Y.) recorded two groundballs.
The Lakers outscored the Mariners, 3-1, in the opening quarter. The visitors scored the first two goals of the game from the sticks of seniors Connor Khammar and Matt Palmer, but Merchant Marine responded with Treon's first of the day, assisted by Harty at 7:25 to cut the deficit down to one. Oswego found the twine with under a minute to go in the first quarter on an unassisted tally by junior Jimmy Cordon.
The roles reversed in the second quarter, as it was USMMA that applied more pressure and gained more momentum as action moved along. Coll made it 3-2 at 10:54 off an assist by Harty and then the duo flip-flopped to produce the next goal from Harty's stick that tied the game at 3-3 at 7:21. Harty gave the Mariners the lead just 35 seconds later on a pretty goal at the right side of the net. The home advantage lasted just about two and a half minutes, however, as Laker freshman Luke Krizman tied the score at 4-4 at 4:14. Merchant Marine had five more shots in the final four minutes of the opening quarter, but was unable to cash in and the teams went into the halftime break knotted up at 4.
Palmer scored his second goal of the game early in the third quarter to put Oswego back ahead, 5-4. The teams then went a long stretch without any scoring before Treon scored his second to tie the game up with 3:59 to play in the third. The Lakers went on to score a last-minute goal yet again, though, as Palmer picked up the hat trick with a tally at 42 seconds.
Oswego was able to run down the clock efficiently in the fourth quarter and wound up outshooting USMMA 6-3 in the stanza as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final frame and the Lakers held on for the narrow victory. Oswego's sophomore goalie Wyatt Russo earned the win after making 10 saves.
Merchant Marine will be back in action the afternoon of Wednesday, March 11, when the squad will face off against the Alfred University Saxons (1-0) in a neutral site game that will be played down in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Myrtle Beach High School. The Saxons have one more game before Wednesday's tilt and that is against Hilbert College this Monday at 3 p.m., also in Myrtle Beach.
