Kings Point, NY – The USMMA men's lacrosse team closed out the 2014 campaign with a dominant 14-6 victory over Washington & Jefferson. Chirs Whitenack (East Meadow, NY) was a perfect 20-of-20 at the face-off "X" while Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) tallied five goals and one assist in the win. Before the opening face-off, USMMA honored its four graduating players who competed in their last collegiate game: Chirs Anthony (Cleveland, OH), Brett Crawford (Arnold, MD), Alex Cline (Draper, UT), and Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA).
Washington & Jefferson (5-11, 0-6 Landmark) scored the opening goal of the game with a Tim Angell with an assist from Max Kroll. Angell finished with a team high three goals for the Presidents while Kyle Heinig posted two goals and two assists for the visitors.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (8-6, 2-4 Landmark) took control of the game from there and rattled off 12 unanswered goals. Harty tied the game with 4:36 to play in the first quarter with an assist from Tim Llull (Havertown, PA). Walker, Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX), and Whitenack combined for all five goals in the second quarter as the Mariners took a 6-1 advantage into halftime.
Smith completed his hat-trick with back-to-back markers to start the second half while Dan McGovern (Baltimore, MD) found the back of the net to make it 9-1. Harty and Crawford both added another man-up tally as USMMA extended the margin to 12-1. The President's outscored the Mariners down the stretch but it was too little, too late as USMMA ended the year with a 14-6 victory.
Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made eight saves in the decision while Matthew Amoscato (Rocky Point, NY) paced the defense with three caused turnovers. Whitenack scooped up a game high 12 ground balls and will be keeping an eye on the national statistics as he currently sits at the top of the nation in face-off winning percentage.
