Men's LAX Playoff Hopes End in 12-7 Loss at Drew
Madison, NJ - The USMMA men's lacrosse team scored six times in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit as the Drew Rangers knocked-off the Mariners, 12-7, Saturday afternoon. The defeat eliminates USMMA from playoff contention after competing in the Landmark Conference championship game last season. Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA) paced the team with four goals while Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, NY) won 12-of-20 at the face-off "X".
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (6-6, 1-4 Landmark) answered an early Ranger goal with a man-up tally at the 8:31 mark off the stick of Walker with an assist from Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL). However, the home side would score four unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 halftime advantage. Kyle Mariboe made eight of his 13 total saves between the pipes for Drew in the first half.
Drew (5-8, 3-3 Landmark) built an 8-2 edge early in the third quarter with a trio of man-up goals, the Rangers ended the day 6-of-9 on extra-man opportunities. The Mariners climbed to within four at 10-6 following three straight goals, the final marker coming on another Harty from Walker combination with the extra attacker. However, Drew registered back-to-back goals down the stretch to ensure there would be no comeback as the Rangers eliminated the Mariners from the playoff race with the 12-7 decision.
The USMMA men's lacrosse team returns to the field Tuesday for a non-conference contest at Mitchell.
