Men's Lacrosse Suffers 11-4 Setback at Scranton

Scranton, PA - Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made 13 saves for the USMMA men's lacrosse team but the Mariners offense struggled in an 11-4 loss at Scranton Saturday afternoon.  Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, NY) continued his strong season, dominating the face-off "X" by winning 14-of-17 draws.   Brett Crawford (Arnold, MD) led the Mariners with two goals while Gus Sawicki (Louisville, CO) forced a game high four turnovers.

Scranton (9-5, 4-0 Landmark) opened the scoring with two straight goals as Matt Tibbitts and Andrew Callaghan both found the back of the net to make it 2-0.  Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX) answered with an unassisted tally to make it 2-1 before the Royals answered with a Alec Mikrut score.  Crawford cut the deficit to 3-2 with 1:11 to go in the first quarter as he deposited a Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) pass into the cage.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (6-5, 1-3 Landmark) responded to a Scranton goal early in the second quarter with a man-up tally from Crawford.  However, both teams finished the afternoon just 1-of-7 with an extra attacker.  The Royals defense shut down the USMMA offense for a combined span of 32:01 from the second quarter into the fourth.  During that streak, Scranton rattled off seven unanswered goals to build an 11-3 cushion.

Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY) notched the final goal of the game with 3:58 to play but the Royals came away with the 11-4 verdict.  Nicholas McKaba totaled eight saves in net for the home side.

The USMMA men's lacrosse team returns to the field next Saturday for a 3:00 PM Landmark Conference game at Drew.
