Danbury, CT - Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) exploded for five goals and three assists, eight total points, as the USMMA men's lacrosse team picked up a 19-9 triumph Wednesday night over Western Connecticut State. Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) notched 10 saves between the pipes whilie Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, NY) continued his dominant season on the face-off "X", winning 18-of-26 draws. USMMA scored the final 10-of-11 goals in the first half as the Mariners built a 10-3 advantage heading into halftime.
Merchant Marine (4-4) grabbed its first lead of the day at 3-2 at the 7:33 mark of the first quarter after Harty scored his third straight goal, this time on the man advantage. USMMA finished the game 3-of-9 on man-up opportunities as the Mariners outshot the Colonials, 55-29 for the game. Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX) deposited back-to-back shots into the cage to give Merchant Marine an 8-3 cushion while Harty and Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA) had the final two goals of the first half.
Western Connecticut State (3-6) notched the opening goal of the third quarter but Ray Waters (Sayville, NY) struck for two straight markers as the USMMA edge grew to 12-4. Kevin Seery made 21 saves for the Colonials through the first three quarters but the Mariners secured a comfortable 16-6 lead. Merchant Marine forced WCSU into 22 total turnovers as Walker and Gus Sawicki (Louisville, CO) each caused three miscues.
Whitenack posted a game high 20 ground balls and Walker scooped up nine ground balls of his own. Smith finished with four goals for the Mariners while Walker, Brett Crawford (Arnold, MD), Dan McGovern (Baltimore, MD), and Waters all scored twice.
The USMMA men's lacrosse team returns to action Saturday at 1:00 PM as the Mariners host Mount St. Vincent at Brooks Stadium.
