Elizabethtown, PA - The USMMA men's lacrosse team suffered its second staright defeat to start the 2014 season Saturday afternoon, falling at Elzabethtown, 10-4. Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) scored twice for the Mariners while goaltender Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made nine saves in the loss. The Blue Jays had four different players tally a pair of goals while two netminders, Chris Wenger and Adam Moore, combined for the victory.
Elizabethtown (1-0) scored three times in 1:12 in the middle of the opening quarter. Joe Clark had two of his three assists during that stretch, which would account for all of the scoring in the first quarter. The Blue Jays made it 4-0 at the 9:53 mark of the second quarter on a Jason Clough goal that provided the Blue Jays margin at halftime.
Merchant Marine (0-2) got on the board early in the third quarter to make it 4-1 on the strength of a Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA) tally, assisted by Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY). However, Elizabethtown accounted for the next three goals to build a 7-1 advantage before Harty slotted home an unassisted goal at 9:57 of the fourth quarter. Harty and Eric Kennedy (Massapequa, NY) posted back-to-back goals to make it 8-4 with 3:14 remaining in regulation. However, the Blue Jays sealed the game by finding the back of the cage twice in 14 seconds to seal the 10-4 decision.
The USMMA men's lacrosse team will play its first home game Wednesday night at 7:00 pm against rival Maritime (NY).
