Towson, MD – In a preview of next week's Landmark Conference semifinal the USMMA men's lacrosse team fell at Goucher, 10-5, Saturday afternoon. The victory wraps up the Landmark Conference regular season championship for the Gophers with the Mariners slated to be the #4 seed in the upcoming tournament. Kevin Young (Springfield, VA) totaled 10 saves between the pipes for USMMA while his counterpart, Connor Mishaw, made 14 stops for the home team.
Merchant Marine (8-7, 3-3 Landmark) netted the only goal in the first quarter as Delaney Oksman (Portsmouth, VA) deposited an Eric Kennedy (Massapequa, NY) feed into the back of the cage to make it 1-0. However, the Gophers rattled off the opening three goals of the second quarter to grab a 3-1 edge. Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) would score twice in the quarter for USMMA but the home team held a 6-4 advantage heading into halftime.
Goucher (8-7, 6-0 Landmark) notched the first of three straight goals to start the second half off the stick of Steve Patterson. Patterson would pace the Gophers with four goals in the game while Owen Demmerly added a pair of tallies to his stat line. Oksman struck again at the 13:02 mark of the fourth quarter with an assist from John Atkinson (Garden City, NY) to make it a 9-5 affair. But the Mariners would be unable to close the gap down the stretch as the Gophers took the game, 10-5.
Sean Slattery (Massapequa, NY) played superbly in the USMMA defense, registering game highs of six ground balls and four caused turnovers. The Gophers held a 47-28 advantage in shots as well as taking 12 of the games 19 total face-offs.
The Mariners and Gophers will meet again Wednesday at 7:00 pm in Towson, MD in the Landmark Conference semifinals with a trip to next Saturday's Landmark Conference Championship Game on the line.
