Sellinsgrove, PA – In a defensive struggle, the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (4-3, 1-1) were clipped by the Crusaders of Susquehanna University (7-3, 2-0) 10-5 Saturday afternoon in Sellinsgrove, PA.
Freshman attacker John Atkinson (Garden City, NY) led Merchant Marine in scoring with a pair of goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Sean Sheehy (Annapolis, MD) won more than have of the face offs he contested and scooped a game-high five ground balls.
The Crusaders jumped out to a quick start, outscoring Merchant Marine 3-0 in the first quarter. Susquehanna challenged the Mariner defense, slinging 18 shots towards the USMMA goal in the opening quarter alone.
Junior midfielder Phil Walker (East Falmouth, MA) broke the scoring drought for the Mariners less than a minute into the second frame. However, Susquehanna answered just 53 second later to extend the Crusader lead to 4-1.
A tally by junior midfielder Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX) cut the Mariner deficit to two, but the Crusaders finished the half strong, scoring the final three goals before the break.
Atkinson gave the Merchant Marine a boost, netting the first goal of the second half, but the Mariners found it difficult to turn the tide of the game as they surrendered three of the final five goals to drop the 10-5 decision.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made a total of 13 saves, maintaining his Landmark Conference leading save percentage of 65.3%.
The Mariners be on the road for their next game; a 7:00 PM tilt against Manhattanville on Wednesday, March 27.
