The United States Merchant Marine Academy's lacrosse team (2-2) defeated the University of Dallas (1-3) Friday afternoon by a score of 21-4 in Irving, Texas.
Kings Point was led in scoring by senior attacker Sean Zakow who notched a goal and five assists. Zakow now leads the Mariners in both points and assists. Junior midfielder/attacker Delaney Oksman netted four goals, giving him the team lead and freshman attacker Jeff Harty also contributed a goal and four assists.
Senior midfielder Chris Kerner scored two goals for Dallas. However, the Crusaders couldn't seem to muster much offense in a game which they were hampered by turnovers. Kings point was a perfect 19-19 on clearing attempts and only turned the ball over seven times, compared to the Crusaders' 21.
The Mariners were on the attack early, pelting a total of 48 shots towards Blaise Dufrain, the Crusader's senior net minder. Kings Point scored the first seven of the game as they opened up a 7-0 lead heading into the beginning of the second quarter. Dallas made a valiant attempt at a comeback, scoring the first two goals of the second period, but the deficit was already too deep. USMMA scored the next 11 goals to take an 18-2 lead midway through the third quarter.
The Crusaders finished strong two of the game's last three goals, but it wasn't enough to stop the Mariners from capturing their largest margin of victory of the season.
USMMA will return to Kings Point to host their first home game of the season Wednesday March 14th against SUNY Maritime (1-4) at 7:00 PM.
