Walsh Named Skyline Men’s Basketball Rookie Of The Year

NEW YORK (Feb. 26, 2018) – On Monday morning, the Skyline Conference announced the postseason award winners and All-Conference Teams for the 2017-18 men's basketball season and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) was selected by the league's head coaches as the Skyline Rookie of the Year. 

Throughout his freshman campaign, Walsh was named the Skyline Rookie of the Week a league-best five times (Nov. 27, Dec. 11, Jan. 8, Jan. 15 & Jan. 22). He led the Mariners, was tied for 13th in the Skyline and was the top rookie in the league with 13.2 points per game. He was also second on the squad with 49 three-pointers made and his 2.0 threes per game were good for 10th in the conference. The freshman also ranked seventh in the Skyline with 1.5 steals per game and 13th with 2.8 assists per game. 

Walsh helped lead the Mariners to a 9-15 overall record, including a 7-13 mark in Skyline Conference action under first-year head coach Rob Pryor. Prior to the season, USMMA was picked to finish in last place (11th) by the Skyline head coaches, but ended the year tied for eighth place.
