Men’s Basketball Stymied By Mount St. Mary On The Road, 63-51

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team was defeated on the road by Mount St. Mary College, 63-51, on Tuesday night at the Knight's Kaplan Center. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 9-13 (7-11 Skyline) on the season, while MSMC improves to 12-12 (12-7 Skyline) with the victory. 

Junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) recorded the game's only double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. It was his sixth double-double of the season. Sophomore Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added a team-best 12 points off the bench, while classmate Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) drained 11. 

Both junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) and freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) scored eight points apiece, with Wittendorf also bringing down eight rebounds and Walsh registering a game-high six assists and three steals. Senior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) rounded out the Mariners' scoring with two points off the bench. 

USMMA grabbed the first lead of the game, but the advantage switched a total of seven times in the first five-plus minutes after the two squads kept trading baskets. With the Mariners ahead 12-11 at 14:39, the Knights went on a 24-3 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 20-point lead, 35-15 at 3:13. The hosts went into the locker room with a 37-21 advantage. 

Merchant Marine came out strong in the second half and cut the deficit back down to single digits just over six minutes in. The Mariners were able to fight back to within just five points, 51-46, with 6:06 remaining, however MSMC went on a 12-2 run in the next five-plus minutes to go back up by 15 and secure the win. 

For Mount St. Mary, senior Tyler McDine led all players on the night with 14 points to go along with four rebounds and a team-best four steals, while sophomore Kendall Francis chipped in with 11 points off the bench. Freshman Paul Sienke led the Knights with five rebounds in the victory. 

Up next, the Mariners will travel to Brooklyn this Thursday, Feb. 15, for a road contest at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Tipoff against the Bears is scheduled for 7 p.m. at SJC's Hill Center.
