Five players scored in double-figures for USMMA, as freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) led the way with 17 points, thanks in large part to five three-pointers. Sophomore Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) made connected on three from downtown and finished with 13 points, while senior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) also added 13 off the bench.

Junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) contributed 11 points with a team-high seven rebounds and freshman Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) chipped in with 10 points. Freshman Jesse Neloms (Memphis, Tenn.) had nine points off the bench and sophomore Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added eight with a game- and career-high nine assists. Junior Kijona Henley (Smithfield, Va.) scored a layup off the bench and rounded out the Mariner scorers with two points.

The Mariners wasted little time to build their lead up to double-digits, as the advantage hit 11 points at 15:15 of the first when Walsh hit his second three of the game to make it 20-9. The lead stayed over 10 the remainder of the half, hitting as high as 20 points on four separate occasions and Merchant Marine took a 54-40 lead into the halftime break.

The advantage did drop to as low as seven points after the Gryphons started the second half on a 7-0 run, but the Mariners quickly got it back up to 14 points after a 9-2 run made it 63-49. Sarah Lawrence answered with an 8-2 run to cut its deficit down to 65-57 at 11:16, but that was the closest the visitors would get the rest of the night.

The Gryphons were led by senior Malin Segal, who knocked down an incredible eight three-pointers to finish the night with a game-high 26 points. Sophomore B.J. Sanders added 18 points and led all players with nine rebounds.

Up next, the Mariners will take on Skyline opponent Purchase College this Saturday, Jan. 27, up in Westchester County. Tipoff against the Panthers is set for 12-noon. Live stats for the game will be available at this link
