Walsh Named Skyline & ECAC DIII Metro Rookie Of The Week

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2018) – On Monday, the Skyline Conference announced that USMMA freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) was selected as the Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 14. Then on Tuesday, the Eastern College Athletic Conference selected him as its DIII Metro Rookie of the Week. This is the second-straight week and fourth time overall that Walsh has earned the accolade from the Skyline and second time this year from the ECAC.

This comes after his performances in the Mariners' three Skyline games last week – an 86-81 road loss at SUNY Maritime on Monday, a 73-71 road victory at St. Joseph's-Long Island on Wednesday, and a 93-92 home overtime loss to Mount St. Mary on Saturday.

Walsh recorded two 20-plus point games over the three outings last week. At Maritime, he had a career-high 25 points and at home against MSMC he posted a game-high 24 points. He hit six three-pointers in the overtime loss to the Knights on Saturday, while also bringing down five boards with six assists. At Maritime, he shot 71.4% (10-for-14) with three 3's. In between was a solid 13-point, five-rebound effort in the win at SJC-LI on Wednesday.

Walsh is one of five Mariners to rank in the top 10 in a statistical category in the Skyline Conference. His 2.3 three-pointers per game is tied for sixth in the league. Below are the remainder of the Mariners ranked in the top 10:

  • Junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) ranks fifth in the Skyline with 9.1 rebounds per game, second with 2.2 steals per game and tied for third with 1.3 blocks per game.
  • Freshman Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) is ninth in the conference with 13.9 points per game, third with a .862 free-throw percentage and eighth with a .467 shooting percentage.
  • Sophomore Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.Y.) ranks second in the league with a .407 three-point shooting percentage and third with 2.8 3's per game.
  • Sophomore Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) is tied for fifth in two categories – assists per game (3.8) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4)
