Washington Earns Skyline Player Of The Week Honors; Also Named MBWA DII-DIII Honorable Mention

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 19, 2017) – USMMA junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) was selected by the Skyline Conference on Monday as the league's Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 17. And then on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) selected him as a Division II-III honorable mention for the week. The honors come after his performance in the Mariners' 70-65 overtime loss to Skyline opponent Yeshiva on the road Thursday night. 

Washington recorded a double-double in the losing effort, as he scored 15 points, which was second-best on the team, and also brought down a game-high 20 rebounds. The junior shot 7-for-11 from the floor (63.6%) and also registered two assists, two steals and a block on the night. Washington currently ranks third in the Skyline with 10.1 rebounds per game and is tied for first with 2.6 steals per game,  while his 1.1 blocked shots per game are good for sixth in the league and his 33.9 minutes played are tied for fifth-most. 

Below are the rest of the Mariners who rank in the top-10 statistically in the Skyline Conference. 

  • Senior George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, N.Y.) is fifth in the league with 16.3 points per game, tied for seventh with 3.3 assists per game and fourth with 34.4 minutes played per game.
  • Sophomore Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) ranks third in the Skyline with a .395 three-point shooting percentage and his 2.5 three-pointers per game are tied for fourth.
  • Senior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) has the league's best assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.9 and his 2.0 steals per game are tied for third.

The Mariners are back in action the weekend of Dec. 29-30, when they take part in the 2017 Buffalo Wild Wings Classic, hosted by Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md. USMMA will take on Penn State- Abington to open the event on Friday night, Dec. 29, beginning at 6 p.m.
