Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team plays back-to-back games over the weekend against Goucher and Vaughn. The Mariners have won three of its last four but fell to Scranton, 75-63, on Wednesday night. The Gophers are flying high after a 100-97 double overtime victory against Susquehanna in which Alex Noble buried a three-pointer in the final second of the second extra session. The Warriors already have three more wins than all of last year, currently sitting at 12-8 before a Friday clash with CCNY.
Series History... Merchant Marine holds a 10-5 advantage in the all-time series against Goucher. However, the Gophers claimed a 72-65 triumph over USMMA earlier this season. In that game, USMMA had a 40-28 lead at halftime as well as a 49-32 overall rebounding advantage. Merchant Marine is a perfect 3-0 in its history against Vaughn, including an 84-43 rout in last year's matchup.
Smith's Sharp Shooting... Sophomore David Smith (Lakewood, WA) paced USMMA with 19 points Wednesday night against Scranton. For the second time in four games, Smith knocked down five three-pointers. During that span, he is 40.5 percent from downtown and is hitting 89 percent of his free throw attempts.
Size Advantage... Merchant Marine leads the Landmark Conference in the "big-man" categories of rebounds and blocks. USMMA is pulling down 42.6 rebounds per game and blocking 4.4 shots per game. Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) anchors the Mariners, and ranks second in the league, with 8.6 rebounds per game.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Scranton and Catholic are both tied for first-place in the league at 7-2. Moravian sits in third at 5-5 with Drew, Susquehanna, and Merchant Marine all within one-half game of each other for the final playoff spot.
Scouting the Gophers... Julian Livingtston is Goucher's leading scorer, averaging 17.2 points per game. The Gophers have a -4.6 rebounding margin this season and only provide 11.5 assists per game. Alex Noble is the squad's leading rebounder with 6.0 boards per game.
Scouting the Warriors... Jeffrey Noel is supplying 20 points per game for Vaughn in 2013-14. The Warriors are making 6.8 three-pointers per game but average taking over 22 attempts from downtown. Eric McDonald records a team high 6.6 rebounds per game.
