Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team will look to defeat the team in first-place in the Landmark Conference standings for a second straight game Wednesday night as Scranton comes to O'Hara Hall. The Mariners have climbed their way back into the playoff race after toppling Catholic, 93-83, in Washington, DC over the weekend. The Royals enter the contest riding a six game winning streak and have only two losses in conference play this year, both in overtime, including one at the hands of Merchant Marine.
Series History... Scranton holds a 12-7 advantage in the all-time series against the Mariners. However, USMMA defeated the Royals, 86-83, in overtime earlier this season. In that game, Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) led the scoring for Merchant Marine with 16 points. In each of the last three games between these two programs, the road team has picked up the victory in enemy territory.
Power "Sergio"... Nick Sergio exploded for career highs of 34 points and 18 rebounds in the Mariners upset of Catholic. The senior center was tabbed the Landmark Conference Player of the Week as USMMA also defeated Drew. Sergio leads Merchant Marine with 13.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season.
#USMMAblue Streak... Entering Wednesday's action the Mariners hold a three-game winning streak for the first-time this year. In each of the last two games USMMA has surpassed 50 percent shooting from the field, eclipsing the 90-point plateau both times. Merchant Marine has also been hot from three-point range, making at least six trifectas in each of the last three games.
Home Stand... The Mariners are currently in a stretch of playing six home games in seven contests. USMMA is 3-3 at home during that time and will next play Scranton, Goucher, and Vaughn in Kings Point, NY.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Scranton and Catholic are both tied for first-place in the league at 6-2. Drew and Susquehanna occupy the next two spots at 4-4 while Moravian and USMMA sit one-half game out of the final playoff spots at 4-5.
Scouting the Royals... The Royals boast the leading scorer in the Landmark Conference with Ross Danzig averaging 21.8 points per game. The Royals have the most high-powered offense in the circuit at 80.6 points per game but rank seventh in the conference in three-point percentage.
