Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team rounds out a three-game home stand Wednesday night against Drew. The Mariners will be looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since December following a 79-68 triumph over Juniata. The Rangers are coming off of a 79-74 home victory against Goucher as Drew won two-of-three heading into its tilt with USMMA.
Series History... Merchant Marine holds a commanding 9-2 advantage in the all-time series against Drew. The Mariners swept last year's meetings, including an 82-68 decision inside O'Hara Hall. Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) dominated the glass in that game with 15 rebounds and nine offensive boards.
Sharp Shooters... David Smith (Lakewood, WA) tallied five of Merchant Marine's 11 total three-pointers as the Mariner sharp shooters paved the way in a 79-68 triumph over Juniata Saturday afternoon. Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, KS) knocked down three treys of his own as USMMA was 55 percent from downtown.
Home Stand... USMMA's clash with Drew is the Mariners sixth home game in their last seven outings. Merchant Marine is currently 2-3 on the home stand and after a road game at Catholic the Mariners will play three more straight games in Kings Point, NY.
Block Party... Seven different players recorded a block versus Moravian as Merchant Marine added to its Landmark Conference leading total. The Mariners are averaging 5.9 blocks per game as well as a circuit best 42.2 rebounds per game.
Landmark Conference Notebook... After Scranton's victory over Catholic last week there are no undefeated teams remaining in the league. The Cardinals remain in first at 5-1 with the Royals right behind at 4-2. The remaining six teams are all just 1.5 games or less out of third-place.
Scouting the Rangers... Mike Klinger ranks second in the Landmark Conference, scoring 20.0 points per game. John Ford is averaging 12.1 points per game while shooting 44.5 percent from three-point range. The Rangers are the top free throw shooting team in the league, making 79.6 percent of their attempts at the charity stripe.
