Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team takes on Susquehanna Saturday afternoon for a Landmark Conference tilt in Selinsgrove, PA. The Mariners are coming off of a tight 68-66 victory Tuesday night over Trinity (CT) to snap a four-game skid. The Crusaders have won three of their last four games, including an 88-77 triumph last time out over Goucher.
Series History... Merchant Marine holds an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series against Susquehanna. USMMA swept two meetings with the Crusaders last season, including a 79-73 verdict on the road that clinched the Mariners a berth in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
Padgett's Memorable First Start... Sophomore Preston Padgett (Leavenworth, KS) made a huge impact in his first career start Tuesday against Trinity. He paced all scorers with 17 points, setting a new career high on 6-of-9 shooting. Padgett was clutch late as he grabbed an offensive rebound, got fouled, and made two free throws with 27.9 seconds left to break a 64-64 tie.
Block Party... USMMA recorded seven blocks against the Bantams and leads the Landmark Conference with 5.9 rejections per game. Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) and Scott Dennin (Gilbertsville, PA) rank in the league's top-five with 1.6 and 1.4 blocks per game, respectively.
Statistical Ranking... Merchant Marine currently leads the Landmark Conference with a rebounding margin of +6.9 per game. That also ranks USMMA in the top-40 in NCAA Division III. The Mariners also top the Landmark stats in total rebounds per game at 42.6.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Catholic is the lone unbeaten team remaining in the Landmark Conference at 3-0. The Cardinals, the defending league champions, are also on a circuit best four-game winning streak. USMMA currently sits eighth in the conference at 1-3.
Scouting the Crusaders... Brandon Hedley leads Susquehanna and ranks third in the Landmark with 17.6 points per game. Harley Sellinger is the league's top rebounder at 9.0 boards per game in 2013-14. The Crusaders are 6-3 at home on the year, including four straight inside the friendly confines of Houtes Gymnasium.
