Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team takes on service academy rival Coast Guard Tuesday night in New London, CT. The Mariners enter the contest having lost two straight, including their Landmark Conference opener at Goucher, 72-65, on Saturday. The Bears currently hold a 2-5 record and have alternated wins and losses after dropping three straight to start their season. Coast Guard's last outing was a 77-65 setback at the hands of Connecticut College on Sunday.
Series History... Merchant Marine trails the all-time series against Coast Guard, 27-18. However, the Mariners knocked off the Bears last year, 72-44, in Kings Point. In that game, Reed Buck notched 22 points as USMMA shot 46.8 percent from the field.
Smith as Strong Sixth Man... David Smith (Lakewood, WA) has provided a scoring spark off the bench for the Mariners in each of the last two games. Smith has recorded 16 and 12 points in back-to-back outings and also grabbed eight rebounds against NYU. His output against NYU established the sophomore guard's new career high.
Power "Sergio"... Senior Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) posted his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds versus Goucher. He leads the Mariners with 11.8 points per game this season and is also averaging 7.0 rebounds per game. The 6-8 forward has also shown improvement at the free throw line this year, shooting at just under 65 percent from the charity stripe.
Foul Trouble... In the last two games, both USMMA losses, the Mariners have been whistled for 59 fouls. Those fouls resulted in Goucher shooting 32-of-43 (74.4%) and NYU posting 24-42 (57.1%) at the free throw line. Both games were tightly contested as Merchant Marine opponents averaged 22 more attempts at the foul line.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Catholic, Goucher, Juniata and Scranton all earned a victory in the first Saturday of Landmark Conference action. Ross Danzig of Scranton leads the league in scoring with 22.0 points per game while USMMA tops the statistics with 47.2 rebounds per game.
Scouting the Bears... David Anderson paces Coast Guard in points and rebounds per game with 13.3 and 6.3, respectively. The Bears have consistently gotten to the foul line in 2013-14 and are shooting at a 70.9 percent clip as a team.
Up Next... USMMA will round out its five game road trip over the weekend with back-to-back conference games at Scranton and Moravian.
