Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team opens its Landmark Conference slate Saturday at Goucher. The Mariners dropped the opener of their current five game road trip to NYU, 77-67, last time out. The Gophers enter Saturday's tilt having lost three straight, including an 81-67 decision to Marymount on Sunday.
Series History... The Mariners currently own the advantage in the all-time series against Goucher, 10-4. The two teams split the 2012-13 series with each side earning a road victory. USMMA defeated the Gophers in Baltimore last year, 61-52, behind 21 points from Reed Buck.
Smith Breaks Out... Sophomore David Smith (Lakewood, WA) had a superb game off the bench for Merchant Marine against NYU. Smith totaled 16 points and eight rebounds through just 17 minutes of action. The mark set a new career best for Smith as it was just his second trip to double digits.
Consistent Karczewski... Senior captain Zach Karczewski (Austin, TX) has been very consistent for the Mariners in the early portion of 2013-14. The guard has posted between nine and 14 points in every game, including 13 against NYU. Karczewski is shooting over 40 percent from both the field and from three-point range.
Miller in the Mix... Freshman Matthew Miller (Augusta, GA) has made an immediate impact for the Mariners in 2013, starting all four games this season. The freshman is averaging 26.8 minutes per game, third highest on the team, as well as 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Miller is shooting 82.4 percent from the free throw line as a rookie.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Saturday opens the start of the Landmark Conference season for all eight league teams as Catholic looks to defend its 2013 championship. Juniata enters the conference schedule having won five straight games.
Scouting the Gophers... Julian Livingston is Goucher's leading scorer with 18.0 points per game while shooting 47.4 percent from the field. Jesse Mondry is the squad's top rebounder but the Gophers currently have a rebounding margin of -4.2 on the year.
