Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team kicks-off a crucial three-game home stand Wednesday night as the Moravian Greyhounds invade O'Hara Hall for a Landmark Conference clash. The Mariners and Greyhounds are both currently tied for fifth place in the league standings, one game out of the final playoff spot. Merchant Marine knocked off Goucher, 61-52, Saturday night while Moravian had a three-game winning streak snapped versus Juniata on the same day.
Series History... Merchant Marine leads the all-time series with Moravian, 8-4, after the Greyhounds defeated USMMA 89-58 earlier this season. The Mariners will be looking for a measure of revenge Wednesday night as that decision was the largest margin of defeat for Merchant Marine in 2012-13. In the last three games between these teams the home side has come out on top each time.
Power "Sergio"... Junior Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) is averaging 10.0 rebounds over the last six games. Last time out, Sergio posted 18 points and seven rebounds while hitting 8-of-11 at the charity stripe. Sergio is currently tied for the Landmark Conference lead in rebounding, hauling-in 7.7 boards per game throughout 2012-13.
Block Party... The Mariners are the top shot blocking team in the league and currently rank tenth in the nation, tallying 5.3 blocks per game. Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) sends back an average of 2.05 shots per game, making him 31st in NCAA Division III. Merchant Marine has rejected 16 shots over the last two games. Moravian has the second highest shot block total in the Landmark Conference with 3.5 per game.
1,000 Points... Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA) sunk a free throw late in the second half against Wesleyan (CT) last, scoring his 1,000th point in a Mariner uniform. Buck's 22-point performance was the ninth time this year he eclipsed 20 points in a game. Buck is the reigning Landmark Conference Player of the Year and currently leads the league in scoring, averaging 18.8 points per game.
Up Next... USMMA continues its home stand Saturday afternoon as Juniata comes to O'Hara Hall. Saturday also marks Senior Day as the Mariners' graduating players will be honored before tip-off.
