USMMA Challenges #24 Stevens; Falls 66-56

Hoboken, NJ - The USMMA men's basketball team held a lead late in the first half but eventually fell on the road to #24 Stevens Tuesday night. Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) and Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) both recorded a double-double for the Mariners. USMMA was limited from behind the arc, shooting just 16.7 percent (2-12) from downtown.

Merchant Marine (9-7) gained control of the momentum with a 12-0 run to erase an early deficit and grab a 23-18 lead in the opening half. The run was started by five points from Preston Padgett(Leavenworth, KS) and also included five points from Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA). Buck finished the night with a team high 13 points for the Mariners.

Stevens (12-1) closed the opening period with a 10-2 spurt that propelled the Ducks into halftime with a 36-33 advantage. The home team went on to build a ten point cushion five minutes into the second half. The Mariners would get no closer than eight points down the stretch as Stevens maintained its perfect home record in 2012-13.

Sergio's double-double consisted of 11 points and 11 rebounds while Williams posted 12 points and 10 boards. Williams was also a flawless 6-of-6 at the charity stripe. Despite the loss USMMA did win the battle on the glass, out-rebounding Stevens, 43-38.

The Mariners return to action this Saturday for a Landmark Conference clash against Juniata. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Huntingdon, PA.
